4 Simple Techniques to Help you Stay Focused on Your Work

December 5, 2010 by Daniel Sharkov|

Stay Focused

Stay FocusedSo you have decided to make a new blog post? Opened MS Word and started writing like crazy – in 15 minutes you have a
killer article that eventually gets tons of attention, comments and retweets?

If we were all characters in a blogging fairytale this wouldn’t be something out of the ordinary. Most of you would probably agree that things aren’t always as straight-forward in the real world, where for good or bad we are living.

Sometimes even the smallest things can get in the way and block your flow of ideas. It has happened to me, it probably did to you as well. One of those small things and a subject of this article is focus and
staying focused when blogging. Coming up with top-notch content that can leave a positive impression even on the biggest critics requires a lot of focus. Neglecting that factor is one of the fastest ways to ruin your writing efforts. Keep reading to discover a few great ways to
avoid distractions and to keep a steady focus on your article writing.

Keep Your Goals in Mind

The hardest part when it comes to writing an article is the
first sentence, since you don’t have the “base”. Getting discouraged here and leaving some great ideas unwritten is very easy. I’ve come across that problem once or twice and believe me, it is not a nice feeling. That is the part, which requires a lot of thinking thus staying focused is an absolute must.

Thinking about your goals is a great way to keep yourself motivated. Unless you haven’t started to blog because someone told you that it is cool, you should have a basic idea of what you are striving for.

Throw In Some Basic Ideas First

Instead of wasting time, searching for a great way to deliver the information, start writing down your ideas. Don’t let your flow stop, even if the whole article looks messy and hard to understand in the beginning. Keep in mind that this is only going to be a basic draft of how the article will eventually look like – structuring, content, etc.

You will start searching for grammar and structural mistakes, only after finishing with the draft. I can say from personal experience that using the above technique can save you a good amount of time and help you stay focused.

Taking a Break Can be a Life-Saver

Well not literally a life-saver, but sometimes writing more than an hour non-stop is just too much of an overwhelming experience. You will end up losing focus, which hugely affects the efficiency and writing quality. That is when you should step away from the computer.

Fifteen to twenty minutes will be just enough to
free up your mind and refresh your thoughts. Go eat something, take a nap or check out the local newspaper – it’s all good as long as it doesn’t have to do anything with blogging.

Social Media is Not Always Helping

We all now that social media is an integral part of every blog’s promotion and without a proper strategy, you are never going to gain the recognition you (probably) deserve. Not knowing when to use it can be the biggest setback when trying to write an article though.

Closing all sites that fall in the social media category is a good start. Twitter, Digg, Facebook and the dozens of blogging networks are all in the list. Being offline for an hour or two is not going to hurt your business, so don’t let any exceptions! You are going to gain much more than what you are going to lose.

When utilized properly, the above tips can help you increase productivity and get more work done. What other techniques you have in store in terms of staying focused? Leave your thoughts in the comments section. All feedback is much appreciated.
