To share or not to share…
There has been some debate on whether or not it is a good idea to share your personal life on your blog. For some of you, the nature of your blog may dictate the answer to this question. But for the majority of you out there, it’s up in the air.
So let’s investigate a little…
#1 Connecting With PeopleThere is no simpler way to connect with another human being than by sharing a story or experience from your life with them.
When you begin to tell a story people will naturally start to compare it to their own lives. Think about it, if I tell you:
“So I was at the grocery store the other day…”
I bet your mind jumped to the last time that you were at the grocery store or perhaps an odd experience that you once had at a grocery store. Or if I say:
“Last night I was watching this movie with my girlfriend…”
Your mind would jump to what you were doing last night, the last movie you saw, or to an image of your girlfriend.
My point being it doesn’t take much to connect with someone. But when you are able to make these connections you will start to see a change in your readership. Not only will more people want to read what you have to write, but they will be more willing to share what you have written.
#2 No Research NecessaryYou already have all the facts. The facts are your life. You just lived it.
No one can tell you you’re wrong. No matter how weird, strange, odd, or extraordinary it may seem to the rest of the world there’s no arguing with it because it happened to you.
In fact, the stranger it is, the more people want to hear about it. Now you just have to figure out how you can communicate your story clearly and tie it in to your blog.
This is not as hard as it may seem. Your life actually contains…
#3 The Easiest Inspiration You Can FindI have heard far too many stories about bloggers who gave up because they ran out of things to write about. In my mind, this is not a valid reason, it is simply an excuse.
Whether you realize it or not your life is full of stories. It doesn’t matter if you’re 12 or 82. It doesn’t matter if you’re married or you’ve never been on a date. It doesn’t matter if you have 8 kids, 2 divorces, and a live in a trailer or you’ve never had a friend who lived outside of the fishbowl on your nightstand.
No matter what your situation may be, your life is full of stories. Each and every day you are creating new stories. Sure some of them may be similar to the story from yesterday or last week, but it is a story nonetheless.
Now it is up to you to find the missing link.
#4 It Will Make You a Better WriterRegardless of where you are in your writing career, blogging will make you better.
As you now know, your life is full of stories and your readers (or potential readers) love to hear those stories so that they can connect with you.
Blogging requires you to open up your mind and see the world in a different way. This may not come naturally right away, but the more you do it, the easier it will become. I promise.
Your goal is to take the events of your life, connect them to your blog topic, and effectively communicate them to your readers so that they will connect with you.
This is how you create a following. This is how…
#5 It Will Make You FamousI think it’s safe to assume that you know who Taylor Swift is. I won’t go into too much detail here because I’ve already written a post about how Taylor Swift uses storytelling, but I will tell you this.
I believe that Taylor Swift’s success lies in her songwriting ability.
From an early age Taylor learned to communicate what was going on in her life. She turned her stories into songs. This allowed the people who hear her music to connect with her (often on a very deep level).
Once this connection was made, these people became her fans and Taylor Swift becomes famous.
There is no reason why you can’t be famous too.
Now it’s time to get busy. Find your stories. Make the connections. Become a famous blogger.
