Benefits of Blogging for Students
Today’s article is a guest post by Mariana Ashley. Mariana showcases three of the benefits that blogging has to offer to students…

Between classes, internships, part-time jobs, and university organizations, it seems college students these days are trying to do all they can to get ahead. Recognizing the scarcity of jobs that awaits them in the “real world,” they strive to do what they can to better market themselves. Obviously, this is great, but there is one avenue only some are utilizing to promote themselves—the blog.

Given the always evolving digital world we live in—promoting one’s self online should be a no-brainer. Sure, there are the conventional options such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, but taking the time to develop and maintain a blog can do much more than these simple profiles. According to e-Marketer, an estimated 133.8 millioninternet users will read blogs this year—a number that is slated to only increase in the future, proving that blogs reach a wide audience.

Additionally, blogging regularly has other benefits such as imparting invaluable skills and habits in those that do it. . Below is a list of just some of the main benefits college-age students can gain from having their own blog.

Enhance Your Writing Skills

One of the more obvious benefits any blogger will gain is better writing skills. Sure, you might start out a bit rough at first, but as you get to your 5th, 10th, or even 100th post, the words will likely flow easier. This is especially important for college students, as it will help make those in-depth writing assignments a little less painful. Plus, learning to better express yourself through type will prove beneficial regardless of a student’s major or potential career path, as nearly every line of work rigorously uses email as its primary form of communication. Developing better writing skills is something everyone should strive to do and blogging is a great way to do that.

Show You’re Proactive

Unlike the assignments you churn out for class or the reports you do for work, a blog is something all your own. No one told you to do this—you just did due to your own volition. From regular updates to quality content, if you are blogging consistently, it shows that you know how to take initiative—a quality that’s attractive to many employers.

Plus, a blog will also help you stand out among competitors. Blogging gives you an edge over those limiting their online presence to just the social networking powerhouses. You are more likely to make a lasting impression on hiring managers as your blog allows you to put your best foot forward—just be mindful of content.

Find Your Voice

College is a great time to start a blog—whether professional or personal—as it can be a catharsis. Serving as a sort of modern day journal, it helps you sort out your thoughts and make sense of your place in this world. At the risk of being completely cliché, a blog can help you better understand yourself—your hopes, fears, dreams, and desires as you come of age. This will make you a better member of society as you go forward and live your life with a purpose.

Why Not?

At the end of the day, my only question to those not blogging is why not? It takes little to no time and, although some may argue and worry it will get lost in the sea of other online options, you’ll never truly know until you try. You owe it to yourself.
