6 Quick Tips to Help Organize Your Cluttered Workspace for Maximum Productivity

Cleaning your workspace can make a big difference to your efficiency as a blogger. I found out that myself two weeks ago.

It was a dull day with pretty much nothing to do. I was sitting in front of the PC for some time when I realized what a huge mess my desk was. Tons of paper, photos, food, a cell phone and pretty much everything else you can think of was lying there. It was definitely time for a change.

Read below to see some of the steps you need to follow for a clutter-free workspace:

Start With a To-Do List

Writing down a to-do list can be a great helping hand in every task you are trying to get done. It is no different when it comes down to uncluttering your workspace and especially when you are dealing with something more than a minor makeover. Your desk, drawers and shelves are all part of your workspace, so you need to have some sort of a “plan of attack”. Starting with the places that need the most attention and then moving on to the less problematic areas is the strategy I followed.

Get Rid of the Useless Stuff

Throwing away in the bin what you don’t need sounds quite logical, yet this is something many are not actually doing. Have to admit that I also fall in that category of people. It’s just easier to move the mess that’s on your desk into the drawer or someplace else where you won’t see it. When you happen to need something that’s in that very same drawer for example, you will realize how much of a wrong decision you’ve taken. Finding what you are actually searching for will turn into a daunting and time consuming task. So overall that approach is far from what I would call proper cleaning.

Consider Going Wireless

A great way to keep your workspace clean and simple is to get yourself a wireless mouse and keyboard. I myself made that decision a week ago and it definitely proved to be a good one. Although a wireless setup can cost you a bit more, the money difference isn’t significant. It is great that when you need to do something on the desk, you can easily move the mouse and keyboard aside, so they don’t take space. On the other hand a wireless setup definitely makes your workspace look better with all those wires out of the way. All in all paying the few extra bucks is well worth it.
Keep Only What You Need

Another tough one here. If you want to keep your workspace as organized as possible, you first need to have a clear idea of what actually has to be there and what isn’t a necessity. I can’t quite help you with that task, as it’s up to you to decide. Still things like the book you are reading or your phone charger can hardly be called a necessity. For me a mouse, keyboard and a notebook are just enough.

Stop Eating on Your Desk

Everyone, willing to have a neat workspace should take that into consideration. One of the great things about working from home is that you are at home. This means that the dining-room is probably not that far away. If you are hungry go there, eat, then come back and continue working on your projects. Time is precious, but even the most important of projects can wait for fifteen minutes. On the other hand you can actually save yourself time in cleaning food bits and pieces or bread crumbs. You will also avoid the headache of spilling drinks and ruining important documents.
Cleanup on Weekly Basis

So now that you have done all of this, you would think it’s all done once and for all. It’s never that easy. Even if you have followed the above steps, it will all get messy again at a certain point if you don’t take any action. In that case, action means repeating the whole cleanup process from time to time. Once a week will probably do fine and it’s the schedule I’m following.

Hopefully doing the above will improve the feel and the look of your workspace. This in turn will increase your blogging productivity and will help you in some way or another to avoid distractions. As always don’t hesitate sharing your two cents in the comments section. All of your feedback is much appreciated!
