Are you fed up with your old blog design? Are you searching for a better design that attracts a lot of visitors to read? I am dedicating this post to answer such questions. If your blog design is readable and visitors find it delightful to read your posts then you have created a good environment for them. A pleasant look always captivates reader and visitors but most readers will leave quickly if the text and links are not easy-to-read. I personally find many blogs that are so hard to read and make my eyes hurt. So I don’t read them even if I’m interested in that topic, there are millions of blogs so I just move on to others blog on the same topic. You have only 5 to 10 seconds to catch a potential reader. Increasing readability of your blog directly improves quality of your blog. Here I am sharing some points with you to make your site more readable and eye catching:
Use eye-pleasant colors:Color of your blog must be cool in the sense it should not be an obstacle for readers to read the text. You need to be very particular about selection of your color scheme. Don’t use too many colors especially bright colors because it may change your reader’s mood at the first sight and cause them to never visit your blog again. If your color scheme is really cool and captivating and helping your text to be easily visible then you can say your blog design is amazing.
Use easy-to-read fonts:Your blog must be built with a theme that supports all fonts and typefaces. Every size and color must be fully supported. If you are using dark text on light background then it will work for you. E.g. white text on black background is more readable and pleasant. Personally I suggest you to use fonts like Arial, Georgia or Sans-Serif because these fonts are being used by world’s top most sites like Google, yahoo etc.
Highlight Heading, Subheadings and Links:At first every visitor look at the heading then they further move down to read the content. Your headings must be easily identifiable and hence they should be in dark and bold letters. Your heading should clearly tell what your content is all about. For links dark blue color is best because it is popular and by default also every link has that color.
Take time but choose best theme:With thousands of themes available easily it seems that it is easy to find a good theme, but it’s not. Choose your theme with care and attention. I have personally tried many themes and I find it really time taking to choose a best theme. I develop themes which are more readable and support all fonts and styles. Most people prefer stylish blog and they forget if their text is readable or not. These people often start losing their visitors and readers.
Capture Attention of your visitor with a drop cap:You would have seen in many magazines that most of the articles start with a drop cap. They use drop cap to catch your attention and draw your eye into the beginning of the article. If you are helping your reader to get to the beginning (heading) of the article then you are increasing chances of your post being read. It’s not hard to design a drop cap for your blog. Search online and you will get ready made code for the same.
Keep Paragraphs Short: This is also an effective tip to make your content readable. Divide it in simple and short but meaningful paragraphs. You must be also aware of the fact that writing for web is different from writing on paper. So after writing paragraphs try to minimize the length of your paragraphs without altering their meanings.
Your font size must be at least 14 pixels because it is the optimal minimum for easy-to-read body content. After choosing your font size you need to decide minimal space between two lines. You can decide this using Golden Ratio. The golden ration helps you decide the optimal minimum space between lines. You can calculate this parameter using Golden Ratio Typography Calculator created by Chris Pearson. You can use this tool to determine optimal line height based on your font size and content width. And then you can set that value in your CSS file.
Conclusion:
You are successful in creating readable blog design then you have doubled the value of content of your site. You spend too much time in creating great content, that’s good and implementing these simple tricks will improve visibility and readability of your content.
