Want to Be a Better Blogger? Let’s Start With the Don’ts…

Being a blogger is definitely not a straight-forward thing and requires a lot of different qualities. This time though I won’t be covering the do-this and do-that kind of tips. Instead I will go through some of the habits you will need to change if you want to increase your blogging productivity.

You can change the word “blogging” before “productivity” with pretty much everything else, since the tips easily apply to a lot of different life aspects. Avoiding these will certainly help you become more focused on your actual tasks and get more done:

Stop Doubting Your Abilities

Achieving goals and being successful in what you do hugely depends on your mindset. If you don’t believe that you can actually get a certain task done, then you will eventually prove yourself right. That’s actually the better scenario – you might’ve failed, but you did try.

What’s even worse is that doubting our abilities often prevents us from even trying. We are “certain” that what we are trying is just a time waste and it’s not going to work, when that’s often not the case. The next time you say “I can’t do that” first think about whether someone has actually done it and is successful at it. If the answer is yes, then you can as well! Simple as that!

Another thing that is certain to bring doubt is the way you look at what you do. Reaping the fruits of your work often requires time. When it comes to blogging that time can often extend to months. If you start thinking too much about the outcome of your actions, you will certainly reach the point where you’ll start doubting yourself. Think of it that way – if you do your job i.e. write quality stuff, promote it, SEO it, etc.
and if you do it consistently , sooner or later things will fall into place.

Stop Looking for Answers

Why would anyone want to stop looking for answers you’d ask? After all having your questions answered is the best way to grow and expand your knowledge. That statement would’ve been true if the word “best” wasn’t there…

Of course often times knowing why something happens or how it works is the only way to get it done the right way. However there is another kind of questions that instead of helping you, are keeping you from making progress. “Why is Blogger A earning more than I am?”, “Why is Blogger B’s blog getting more comments?” or “Why does Blogger C have so much subscribers?”, etc. The list can go on and on, but are those questions really helping you?

Knowing the mechanics behind getting more subscribers or visitors is good, but seriously – haven’t you already read tens if not hundreds of articles on these topics?

The chances are that you probably already know what you need done (click on the above links in case you don’t!) in order to achieve these goals.
The only thing you lack is action. So in short – stop asking and start achieving!

Stop Taking Everything for Granted

You started a blog just a month ago, you are hardly getting more than 20-30 daily visits, but then one day, seemingly out of nothing, your numbers crank up to over a hundred. One day passes and another one and then another one. The strange thing is that your numbers seem to be steady nonetheless.

That’s without doubt a great result to say the least. Unfortunately you might be in for a surprise. It is just that when it comes to blogging there are constant ups and downs
and the one thing you don’t have is certainty. A technique you are using might be effective for days, even weeks and then one day it might just stop working. You need to be prepared for those kinds of situations. Always be on the look for different ways to get people’s eyes on your content and never take your stats for granted!

Stop Being Like Everyone Else

That one is especially valid when it comes to blogging. Almost all newbie bloggers are going through pretty much the same steps in the quest to build a blog that stands out. They are applying similar link building methods, similar traffic generation techniques and similar blogging tips in general. This immediately raises a question –
how is it possible to stand out when you are doing exactly the same as everyone else?

Of course I’m not saying that following what others are doing is bad. What I mean is that this alone isn’t enough. You should always be trying to come up with something different, something that very few have actually tried. Search for different solutions to the problems and explore different alternatives. Not many are those who try something outside of the box, but usually namely they are the ones, who really achieve what they want.

Stop Caring Too Much About People’s Opinions

I’m certainly not saying that you absolutely shouldn’t care about what others have to say about you and your blog. Believing that how you’ll look in others’ eyes doesn’t matter in the world we live is… kinda foolish.

No, that is not what I mean. What I mean is that you should have your own style and your own way to do things.
You should not entirely depend on other bloggers’ suggestions, “secret” strategies, tips, tricks, etc. Go there, read their articles, eBooks or whatever other learning material but don’t take it as an absolute truth. Such doesn’t exist. Instead be prepared to bend ideas through your standpoint, be ready to add your twist!

You should
first believe in yourself and your abilities and then in someone else’s thoughts. If you are certain that what you are doing is the right thing, go for it no matter what! People might say you are wrong, you might get criticism and negative reactions, but hey! Does this really mean that you are doing it wrong?

Your Turn

So in brief, if you want to improve your blogging experience and get more done, first of all start believing yourself. Second ingredient is action. No way to go around that one. Through action you can achieve great results, however don’t take them for granted! Third thing to do is try being innovative. Add your twist to everything you do! And last to remember is that you must not give too much weight to criticism. Critics have been and will always be there.

Of course the above list can hardly be called exhaustive, so don’t hesitate sharing your point of view in the comment section!
